It has been a gratifying journey; Beres Hammond’s career truly embodies dedication and passion in the world of music. His recognition by The University of the West Indies with an honorary Doctor of Letters speaks volumes about his impact and influence. The honorary degree was presented to him by Chancellor Robert Bermudez of The UWI. It’s amazing to see how his love for music was nurtured by legendary artists like Alton Ellis, Stevie Wonder, Sam Cooke, and Otis Redding; propelling him into a successful career. His ability to consistently produce hits and connect with his audience reflects not only his talent but also the genuine connection he has built with his fans over the years. It’s remarkable how his music has crossed generational boundaries, resonating with listeners young and old.

Acknowledging his exceptional contributions to Jamaican music, the Government of Jamaica honored Hammond with the prestigious Order of Jamaica in 2013, recognizing his unwavering dedication and unparalleled impact on the industry. Receiving such an honor and being among the eminent figures honored by The UWI, further solidifies his status as a significant contributor to Jamaican music and culture. With a career spanning over five decades, Hammond has left an indelible mark on the industry. The St Mary-born vocalist started his career in the early 1970s with Zap Pow Band. Later that decade he had several R&B hits, among them “One Step Ahead”, produced by Willie Lindo, who also directed him on “What One Dance Can Do”, the 1985 single that set his remarkable sequence of hit songs in motion. Hammond’s musical tale has flourished into a remarkable legacy, birthing over 20 solo albums.

He expressed gratitude for the support over the years. “I make good songs and you [the fans] turn them into hits for me. I want to thank all of you for that,” Hammond said. “Love all a yuh! Thanks for the years of support, and for letting me into your homes. Thank you for letting me into your hearts.” The speech ended with the icon rendering lyrics to “No Goodbye”, “Doctors Order”, and “Rockaway”. Hammond was among a list of 14 eminent figures honored during the Class of 2023 graduation ceremonies. Other recipients included Professor E. Dale Abel; Lascelles A. Chin (posthumously), Soca queen Alison Hinds, Rachel Manley and Ambassador Audrey Patrice Marks.

Beres is grateful for his honor from UWI and thanked his fans.
