Grammy Nominations

November 10, 2023

Come February, the 2024 Grammy Awards in the “Reggae Album of the Year” category certainly seem to be setting the stage for a fascinating showdown among some of Jamaica’s top reggae artists. Here’s a closer look at the 5 artists and their nominated albums:

  1. Buju Banton has received a nomination for his 12th studio album, “Born for Greatness,” which was released in September. The album features collaborations with renowned artists like Victoria Monét, Stephen Marley, and Snoop Dogg. Buju Banton is no stranger to Grammy nominations, having been nominated previously in 2020 for his album “Upside Down.”
  2. Beenie Man, known as the “King of Dancehall,” received a nomination for his 17th studio album, “Simma.” This album offers a diverse blend of dancehall, reggae, afro-beats, and drill music. This marks Beenie Man’s fourth Grammy nomination, with a previous win in 2001 for “Art and Life.”
  3. Julian Marley, the son of reggae legend Bob Marley, is nominated for the album “Colors of Royal,” created in collaboration with the French band Antaeus.
  4. Burning Spear, a notable figure in the reggae music scene, received a nomination for his album “No Destroyer.” This album marked his return to the music industry after a 15-year hiatus.
  5. Collie Buddz, a Bermudian reggae artist, earned a nomination for “Cali Roots Riddim 2023.”

It’s impressive to see these 5 artists, each with their unique contributions to reggae music, being recognized by the Recording Academy for their work. The 2024 Grammy Awards are scheduled to take place on Sunday, February 4, at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California.

Albums eligible for Grammy nominations had to be released between October 1, 2022, and September 15, 2023. Additionally, the Recording Academy has introduced some changes for the 2024 awards, including a rule that “only human creators” can win the Grammy. This change appears to emphasize the importance of human involvement in music creation, possibly in response to the use of AI and technology in music production. Furthermore, two existing categories have been moved to the general field, allowing all Grammy voters to participate in selecting the winners for the producer of the year, non-classical, and songwriter of the year, non-classical categories. These changes reflect the evolving landscape of the music industry and the Academy’s efforts to adapt to it

. . . Who will take home the Grammy Award?

Beenie Man, Burning Spear, Julian Marley, Colli Budz and Buju Banton are nominated for Reggae Grammy Album of the Year.
