december 27, 2023

Though it appeared that the Sting 2023 event was marked for memorable performances, it ended with brawls and unfortunate incidents.  As expected, Capleton, Tanya Stephens, and Bounty Killer delivered standout performances that lived up to expectations, based on circulating fans approval. The iconic event which is dubbed “the greatest one night show on earth” didn’t quite live up to such title. The show started with several newcomers and gradually moved up with known names and then the Top 10 popular acts. The patrons were excited to witness all the hype surrounding D’Angel, Queenie, and other acts who promised a show of a lifetime. Unfortunately, Bounty Killer’s lengthy performance started slow until the collaboration with Baby Cham and Jashii, while Capleton’s fiery stage presence left a lasting impression.  The highly anticipated clash between Fully Bad, Kyodi, and Demarco did not go as planned. A physical altercation broke out between Fully Bad and Honormasity, leading to a massive brawl that marked the end of Sting 2023. This year was the 40th anniversary celebration and Isaiah Laing, the founder, promised a better-organized return for 2023 but faced challenges.

Laing blamed Bounty Killer for the chaos, stating that Bounty did not wait for his turn, leading to a deviation from the planned running order. Fans disagreed and took to social media with disapproval of Laing statement. Most argued that Bounty is not the organizer and was just given the blame for Laing’s poor excuse. Fans were questioning the absence of other artists. One such act was Demarco, who announced his non-participation was due to unmet monetary demands, leaving the clash incomplete. Spragga Benz, Anthony B, Tommy Lee and other artists expressed disappointment for not being able to perform as planned, attributing it to another artist hogging the stage.

There was supposed to be a full scale clash between Fully Bad and kyodi. Unfortunately, Honormasity jumped on stage and challenged Fully Bad instead. The feud escalated into a physical fight, resulting in their arrest and charges of disorderly conduct. They later conducted interviews together and made amends. Event organizer Laing expressed regret over the missed performances and the disruption caused by the brawl. He announced his intention to step down from the show’s promotion team in the following year and turn all operations over to his son. He called for government and corporate sponsors to support Sting, emphasizing its iconic status in Jamaican culture and the need for financial backing to ensure its success as an annual event.

In summary, while the event had its share of successful performances, the disorganization, clashes, and disruptions marred the overall experience. Isaiah Laing took the easy road and attributed much of the chaos to Bounty Killer not adhering to the planned schedule. The aftermath included arrests, expressions of disappointment from artists who couldn’t perform, and Laing’s plea for sponsorship to sustain the event for his son takeover in 2024.
