VP Records Women 2022 CALENDAR

In continuing with Jamaica’s 60th Jubilee, International record label VP Records is paying tribute to several women in reggae music. over the past 60 years with the release of a commemorative calendar for 2022. The project features 12 Jamaican female reggae artists who have played an integral role in the developmental of Jamaican music since independence. This will be an ongoing product from VP Records, simply because there are way more than 12 females with significant contributions to the genre. The list of females selected for 2022 are:

 Phyllis Dillon: OD –  rocksteady pioneer who was a force on Duke Reid’s Treasure Isle Label.

 Marcia Griffiths: OD – icon and Queen of reggae music; former I-Three legend celebrating over 58 years in music.

Judy Mowatt: OD – legend and former I-Three member; now a gospel singer with over 55 years in music.

Rita Marley: OD – Cuban born and former I-Three legend; one of the most impactful artists in Reggae.

JC Lodge – British born iconic reggae singer, songwriter, actress and fine arts painter. She dominated the charts in the 80’s and 90’s. Her hit “someone loves you honey” was song of the decade.

Carlene Davis-Cowan: OD– the reggae icon turned gospel singer is also an ordained minister and cancer survivor.

Nadine Sutherland: child prodigy turned international star, celebrating over 40 years in the industry. Dubplate specialist in the book of Vice-president Kamala Harris.

Tanya Stephens:reggae trailblazer and outspoken female revolutionist.

Queen Ifrica: – reggae cultural singer and fire queen, known for her bold conscious lyrics.

Spice: – Grammy-nominated dancehall artist, actress and entrepreneur.

Jah9:reggae cultural singer, poet, yoga teacher and social scientist.

Shenseea: – dancehall Dolly, model, entrepreneur and MOBO Award winner.

The calendar was birthed from the biography of VP Records co-founder Patricia “Miss Pat” Chin, My reggae music journey. Natasha Von Castle, director of communications at VP Records, stated that the biography serves as the inspiration for the calendar project. Nadine Sutherland who shared the story with me, expressed that “it’s an honor and extraordinary way to empower women from different eras”. Women were always fighting for equal rights in the music industry and VP Records are always staying miles ahead in making it a reality. All 12 women are grateful and excited by this remarkable honor.
