Born Jennifer Esmerelda Hylton, she is known professionally as Foxy Brown, a Jamaican reggae singer. Her first introduction to the reggae charts was via the Steely & Clevie -produced versions of Tracy Chapman’s “(Sorry) Baby, Can I Hold You Tonight”. The tune  topped the reggae charts and secured a placing on the Billboard Top 100 Black Singles chart in 1989. She followed up her debut with another of Chapman’s hits, “Fast Car”, which paralleled its predecessor. These led to her being labeled as just Jamaica’s “Tracy Chapman”. She released her debut album “Foxy” in 1989, which showcased her original competence and songwriting abilities. She gave us a few hits with “Let’s Celebrate”, “Try” and “Baby It’s You”, all featured on the album. In 1990 she had a hit with the dancehall single “Always For Me”, which showcased her versatility and a second album, “My Kind of Girl”, followed in the same year. She also had a hit with Johnny P called “If you Love Me”.

Although the songs were a commercial success, Brown was just regarded as Jamaica’s Tracy Chapman, which hindered her blossoming career. Since the release of her second album she has maintained a low profile, although in the mid-90s the media were inaccurately hailing her return. Though there is confusion with the stage name “Foxy Brown” in the music space, the misconception is often related with US rapper Inga Marchand who also performed as “Foxy Brown”. Sadly to note that Foxy has fallen on hard times and is trying to get herself together with limited help.
