Dancehall Sensation Shenseea
Shenseea on Soundtrack
December 28, 2023
Jamaican dancehall sensation and Grammy nominee Shenseea, is one of the artistes featured on the 2023 soundtrack for the musical drama “The Color Purple”. It’s gratifying to see artists from different genres and diverse backgrounds coming together for such a project. Her collaboration with Fantasia Barrinoon on “Hell No” (Reprise) with Missy Elliott remix adds a unique touch to the soundtrack, especially with the incorporation of a sample from Dawn Penn’s Dancehall version of “You Don’t Love Me (No, No, No)” from 1993. The diverse lineup of artists, including Alicia Keys, Usher, Jennifer Hudson, Mary J. Blige, Keyshia Cole, Coco Jones, Jorja Smith, Celeste, Mary Mary, October London, Shenseea and more, promises a rich and varied musical experience that complements the film’s themes of deep family connection, resilience, and unconditional love. It’s also noteworthy that this is Shenseea’s second appearance on a movie soundtrack in the same year, following her collaboration with Puerto Rican rapper Myke Towers for “Infamous” on the deluxe version of Sony’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse soundtrack. This highlights her growing presence and versatility in the music industry. Overall, the soundtrack appears to be a carefully curated collection of both classic and new songs, featuring a blend of established and emerging artists; thus making it a significant contribution to the musical landscape of the film industry.
The soundtrack for the new adaptation was released December 2023, via Warner Bros’ in-house label Water Tower Music. The musical selections encapsulate the essence of the film’s implication of family connection, resilience and unconditional love. The Oprah Winfrey / Stephen Spielberg production stars Taraji P. Henso, Fantasia, Danielle Brooks, and more.
